November 17 Workshop

We had a very educational presentation called "Remember the Ladies" from Maureen Edwards Tuesday evening. It was gratifying to have such a large group in attendance during this time of the year. Thank you, Maureen, for taking the time to prepare and present this entertaining topic.

The first part of her talk focused on records where it might be possible to discover those elusive maiden names, such as marriage records, the children's birth records, death records, cemeteries and census. Maureen had several examples from her own research. Other possibilities include pension records, wills & probate and various newspaper articles.

Maureen also suggested that researchers might want to learn more about the time and place of a female ancestor by looking for letters, diaries, etc. Even though your particular ancestor may not have left her own records, there are many resources available for her time period. NUCMC, WorldCat, and Internet Archive were some of the suggestions provided.

The handout has specific websites that you might want to access. Extra copies of the handout for "Remember the Ladies" will be available at future meetings. Maureen also donated a Quick Sheet called "Finding Female Ancestors" to our library. We have enough resources on this subject to create a folder for researching women--available for checkout during the year.
