Genealogy Club Library

Have you used our club library? One of our members reported that he checked out one of our Irish research books last year. Since the copyright date was 2009, some of the websites were not current. However, he found one helpful site that led him to his grandfather's birth record!

November 22 Workshop

Five years ago Maureen told us all about the British Home Children--relating the research she did to prove Grandma Salter's ancestry descending from one of those children.

However....

Several years later a DNA test sent Maureen in an entirely different direction. This week we learned "the rest of the story" about Grandma Salter's origins. We learned about a marriage, a later "adoption" and the cousins that helped Maureen find Grandma Salter's real family.

What a fascinating presentation! Thanks for sharing, Maureen.

November 15 Workshop

We followed the search for Jesse Rutherford's grandparents through microfilm of birth, marriage, death and probate records. Research that had to be done in Salt Lake City 20 years ago can sometimes be done now by browsing digitized film at www.familysearch.org. More information was located by using census records.

1. Spelling doesn't count!

2. Find ALL the sibling's records to verify parents' names.

3. Use every vital record available.

4. Browse the census when you cannot locate a family.

Irish Website Recommendation

Former member Deenie (who misses Palm Creek and our club) sent a recommendation for a website to explore. Anyone who has ancestors in the County Down area of Northern Ireland should find this site useful.

Check it out at https://www.rosdavies.com/

Thanks, Deenie!

November 1 Workshop

It was great to have a such a good group for our first workshop. This year we are going to try using a mentoring program for beginners, and it was gratifying to see that several of our members were willing to act in that capacity. The signup sheets for both mentoring and asking for help will be available at our workshops.

We reviewed the most efficient way to narrow a search on both Ancestry and FamilySearch using their census records. There was also time to view the "new" version of the Family Tree, as well as taking a look at several of the Wiki offerings.
